I have been told I have a retinal disorder that may lead to visual impairment. Should I give up on my job? Or change it?

You should not panic and make a hasty decision regarding your present employment that you might later regret. Discuss the options with others in your family, seek advice from experts and counselors, and talk to other people who have similar disorders. You may also be able to talk to your colleagues at work, and perhaps also your human resources department, to check whether your employers are willing to go the extra distance to make some adjustments for you. I feel depressed and not motivated to do much in life. Does this happen to others too?

Most people who are told that they have a retinal condition that may cause significant visual impairment, and that they will have to make adjustments and changes in their lives do become depressed. But we have to face reality. Some tend to accept the situation more easily than others. It is important for you and your family to come to terms with what has happened. The feeling of being alone and isolated is also very common. Once you decide that you will work towards finding your path in life and strive to do something significant with your life, things will change. Will I have to make changes around my home to accommodate my low vision?

People with visual impairment should have easy access to their daily needs, and you may have to rearrange things in the house to make this happen. You can also make changes in terms of lighting within the house, colours and contrasts, texture and large labels. Family members can be involved in these changes by being methodical in where they keep things. You must pay special attention to the safety issues in your home. Should I change my lifestyle due to my retinal disorder?

Visually impaired people participate in most sports and some have achieved significant results. A large number of social and recreational facilities are also available. If you have diabetes, a strict routine schedule is an important part of the treatment. It is also as important for visually impaired people, as for others, to keep themselves fit and not let their disability become a barrier to fulfilling themselves.

Will I become dependent on others as my vision deteriorates?

People with visual impairment can achieve a lot by themselves. You can be independent in most of your daily routine. You can also use devices such as positioning systems and cell phones to make your life easier. People with significant visual impairment can utilize a talking software to help them navigate websites and emails, and be as well connected and informed as others.
